Old Tissue Saree Buyers: How Tissue and Brocade Sarees Are Valued

Tissue and brocade sarees are the showpieces of any silk collection. They shimmer under light, feel rich in the hand and are usually saved for the biggest occasions. If you own a few old ones, you may be wondering whether they are worth selling, and why different old tissue saree buyers quote such different prices. The answer lies in how these sarees are woven and what their zari is made of.
What Is a Tissue Saree?
A tissue saree is woven with silk threads in the warp (the lengthwise threads) and zari in the weft (the crosswise threads). Because zari runs through the whole body, the saree has an all-over metallic sheen rather than zari only at the border and pallu. You can read more on Wikipedia's page on tissue cloth.
Tissue Kanchipurams and tissue Banarasis are especially popular for weddings, with gold, silver and copper toned tissue all common.
What Is a Brocade Saree?
Brocade is a weaving technique, not a fabric. Extra threads, usually zari, are woven in to create raised patterns such as flowers, paisleys and animal motifs. Banarasi sarees are the best known brocades, but many Kanchipuram and other silk sarees also use brocade work. A brocade can be woven on a plain silk body or on a tissue body.
Tissue vs Brocade vs Regular Zari Border Sarees
| Saree type | Where the zari is | Zari quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Regular silk with zari border | Border and pallu | Low to medium |
| Brocade silk | Border, pallu and woven motifs across the body | Medium to high |
| Tissue silk | Throughout the body in the weft, plus border and pallu | High |
| Tissue with brocade | Throughout the body plus woven motifs | Very high |
Why Old Tissue Sarees Can Be Worth More
Since tissue sarees carry zari across the whole body, they often have far more zari by weight than a regular silk saree. If that zari is pure, meaning real silver with a gold coating, the saree carries significant metal value. That is why an old tissue or brocade saree can sometimes be worth much more than a heavier looking plain silk.
The catch is that many tissue and brocade sarees, especially more recent ones, use tested zari, which has a copper core and almost no metal value. Two tissue sarees that look the same can have very different values for this reason. Our guide on how to check pure zari in silk saree shows you how to tell them apart.
How Old Tissue and Brocade Sarees Are Valued
- Zari type: pure zari, 2G or tested zari.
- Zari weight: estimated from the body, border, pallu and motifs.
- Silver rate: the day's market rate for silver.
- Silk value: the purity and condition of the silk warp.
- Condition: tissue sarees can snag and fray, but damaged pieces still carry zari value.

Thinking of Selling an Old Brocade Saree?
If you want to sell an old brocade saree, especially an old Banarasi, a few tips help:
- Do not unpick the motifs. Removing zari by hand damages the saree and rarely adds value.
- Keep it folded gently. Brocade and tissue can crack along sharp folds. Refold along new lines before the evaluation if possible.
- Check for labels. Silk Mark labels and old bills help confirm pure silk and pure zari.
- Sell with your other silks. One evaluation for your whole collection gives you the full picture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are old tissue sarees worth selling?
Yes, especially if the zari is pure. Tissue sarees carry zari across the whole body, so they can hold more metal value than regular silk sarees.
Do you buy old Banarasi brocade sarees?
Yes. We buy old Banarasi and other brocade sarees, including damaged pieces.
My tissue saree has snags and loose threads. Can I still sell it?
Yes. Snags and fraying reduce the silk value, but the zari still has value if it is pure.
Why do two tissue sarees that look the same get different prices?
One may have pure zari with real silver and the other tested zari with a copper core. The zari type makes the biggest difference to the price.
